MUGA PRADO ENEA GRAN RESERVA 2019
Prado Enea is one of the great benchmarks of classic Rioja and the wine that best represents Bodegas Muga’s traditional approach. Based in Haro’s historic Barrio de la Estación, the Muga family has built its reputation on vineyard selection, precise winemaking and extended ageing in oak. Time is an essential part of Prado Enea’s identity: each vintage seeks to express the character of Rioja Alta through elegance, complexity and outstanding ageing potential.
The 2019 vintage marks Prado Enea’s return after the wine was not produced in 2017 or 2018. Its profile combines the depth of a great age-worthy Rioja with a finesse that avoids excessive concentration. Luis Gutiérrez awarded it 97 points in The Wine Advocate, highlighting its power, elegance and excellent ageing potential.
PHILOSOPHY
Prado Enea’s philosophy is built on rigorous grape selection, late harvesting and extended ageing, allowing the wine to evolve gradually. Bodegas Muga maintains a winemaking tradition closely linked to oak, from fermentation vats to ageing barrels, seeking to integrate every component without obscuring the fruit or the origin of the grapes.
The result is a classic Rioja with depth and refinement, in which structure and complexity emerge from the balance between ripeness, freshness and time.
WINEMAKING AND VINTAGE
The winemaking and grape provenance of Prado Enea Gran Reserva 2019 are based on a selection of Rioja Alta vineyards, mainly in Sajazarra, Cellorigo and Fonzaleche, at altitudes ranging from 550 to 700 metres. The Garnacha comes from different high-altitude plots in the Tudelilla area, adding a distinctive aromatic dimension to the blend.
The grapes are hand-harvested into 200kg boxes. After destemming, they undergo optical sorting to ensure quality. According to Luis Gutiérrez, fermentation takes place in small oak vessels with indigenous yeasts. Maceration lasts approximately 14–16 days, with gentle pump-overs, followed by 36 months of barrel ageing.
After its time in oak, the wine continues to mature in bottle before release. It was bottled in January 2023, with approximately 119,000 bottles produced.
The 2019 vintage was balanced and slow-ripening, shaped by a moderately warm, dry climate and cool nights that encouraged full polyphenolic ripeness. The result is a wine with considerable structure, freshness and longevity. In his Wine Advocate review, Luis Gutiérrez noted that the wine was still young and had not yet fully developed its tertiary character, with a long evolution ahead. The recommended drinking window is 2028–2040.
VINEYARD AND GRAPE VARIETIES
The grapes come mainly from Rioja Alta vineyards between 550 and 700 metres above sea level, in villages including Sajazarra, Cellorigo and Fonzaleche. Calcareous clay and alluvial soils, combined with a marked diurnal temperature range and good drainage, help preserve freshness and achieve balanced ripeness.
The blend brings together Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano. Tempranillo provides the structural foundation and depth of fruit; Garnacha adds perfume and breadth; Mazuelo contributes structure and tension, while Graciano reinforces freshness and aromatic complexity. Together, they create a wine of depth, balance and considerable ageing potential.
TASTING NOTES
The nose is intense and exceptionally complex, showing ripe red and black fruit, floral nuances and the distinctive perfume of Garnacha. Extended oak ageing contributes fine spice, clove, cinnamon, cedar and cocoa, integrated with a vibrant fruit profile. Despite its lengthy ageing, the wine has not yet fully developed the tertiary aromas that will emerge with further bottle maturation.
On the palate, it is full and deep, with substantial structure balanced by a fine, elegant texture. Fresh acidity provides tension and balance, while the tannins are ripe and well integrated. The finish is long and persistent, with lingering ripe fruit, sweet spices and subtle balsamic notes.
A Gran Reserva of restrained power and remarkable ageing potential, combining Rioja’s depth with timeless classical elegance.
FOOD PAIRING
Ideal with roast lamb, red meat, traditional stews, game and slow-cooked dishes. It also pairs beautifully with medium- to strongly flavoured mature cheeses. Its complexity makes it a pleasure to enjoy slowly, even on its own, allowing the wine to evolve in the glass.
