DOCa. Rioja, Spain - Tempranillo, Garnacha and others. El Velado is an old and beautiful vineyard of 0.93 ha located at an altitude of 600 metres. It is the first vineyard that they fell in love with in Lanciego and it is probably the best expression of the beauty and uniqueness of this place. El Velado was planted in the easternmost part of the town of Lanciego, and is mostly oriented to the west and south, thus enjoying a warmer light. Due to this exposure, traditional grafting was done mostly with Garnacha and Tempranillo and with some other old varieties, including some white ones. Its 80 years, its size and the sculptural shape of its goblet-shaped vines make this a very special vineyard, full of light, which they wanted to bottle and express separately. The 2017 vintage will be remembered as the one with the great frost on April 27 and 28 (up to -5ºC). Most of the plots in the high areas of Lanciego, such as this one in El Velado, were largely spared from this frost. In addition, although it was a rather warm and dry year, El Velado and its Garnachas are the ones that ripen most normally in these conditions, offering a fantastic wine, mature and complete but at the same time with nerve and great balance. Only 1,524 bottles were filled in May 2019. Recommended by El Sumiller.
