PRADO ENEA GRAN RESERVA 2016
Some wines need time to reveal their full potential. Prado Enea Gran Reserva 2016, produced by Bodegas Muga, is one of them: an elegant and profound Rioja, aged for an extended period, representing one of the most classic and refined expressions of Rioja Alta. This wine is born from patience, the careful selection of vineyard plots, and a philosophy that understands time not as a mere aging process, but as a fundamental tool for building complexity and harmony.
The grapes for Prado Enea come from a meticulous selection of high-altitude plots in the northwest of Rioja Alta, specifically in the municipalities of Sajazarra, Cellorigo, and Fonzaleche. The vineyards lie between 550 and 600 meters above sea level, on a combination of clay-limestone and alluvial soils, terrains that contribute structure, freshness, and depth to the wine. The grapes destined for Prado Enea are always harvested at the end of the growing season, aiming for optimal ripeness and exceptional fruit quality.
The blend combines Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo, and Graciano, four traditional varieties that contribute different dimensions to the wine. Tempranillo forms the backbone of the blend; Garnacha provides fruit and breadth; Mazuelo contributes freshness and structure, while Graciano adds aromatic intensity and complexity.
Winemaking begins with the fermentation of the grapes in oak vats, followed by maceration for 14 to 16 days. Then comes the extended aging process: the wine spends a minimum of 36 months in French and American oak barrels, where it develops complexity, depth, and an increasingly integrated texture. After this stage, it is lightly clarified with fresh egg whites and bottled. But the process is not yet complete: Prado Enea remains in the cellar for at least another 36 months, where it continues to evolve and acquires the elegance that characterizes a true Gran Reserva.
After aging in oak barrels, Prado Enea continues its evolution in the bottle. The 2016 vintage was bottled in January 2020, having reached the necessary maturity to begin its commercial journey. A total of 127,808 bottles were produced, a quantity that allows one to enjoy one of the great classic expressions of Bodegas Muga.
The 2016 vintage presents a profile of great balance and maturity. On the nose, it offers an elegant array of forest fruits, with hints of blackberry and mulberry, accompanied by spices such as cinnamon and clove. The aging contributes delicate creamy and vanilla nuances, perfectly integrated with the fruit.
On the palate, it displays a silky entry and medium body, with a long, pleasant, and extraordinarily harmonious finish. Its tannins are velvety and perfectly integrated with a fresh and balanced acidity, which provides energy and prevents the long aging process from overpowering the wine. Fresh fruit, creamy notes, and hints of spice combine in an elegant, complex, and persistent whole.
Prado Enea Gran Reserva 2016 is a Rioja to be savored slowly. A wine that speaks to the importance of origin, traditional grape varieties, and a winemaking process where oak and time serve elegance. Its extended aging doesn't aim to impose a style, but rather to allow the wine to evolve to achieve a more complex, profound, and harmonious expression.
At El Sumiller, we selected Prado Enea because it embodies one of the great virtues of classic Riojas: the ability to offer complexity and emotion through elegance, without resorting to excessive power. A Gran Reserva that can be enjoyed now, fully developed, yet still retains freshness and the capacity to evolve over the coming years.
