DIEGO CONTOUR NEBBIOLO D'ALBA BALUMA 2023
Conterno is a very prestigious surname in Monforte d'Alba, This family of Conterno is related to that of Conterno-Fantino through Diego's father. Diego studied at the School of Enology Umberto 1, and acquired extensive experience in the development of the traditional Barolo, having worked in Prunotto, with the patriarch of Barolo recently deceased Beppe Colla. In 1982, he undertook a successful business with his cousins Claudio and Guido Fantino, which lasted until the year 2000. With the beginning of the new century, Diego decided to sell his part of Conterno-Fantino to face new challenges. As a result, he founded his own winery under his name, on the same slope that Giacomo Conterno owns his vineyards.
Diego, his wife Anna and 'sons' Stefano and Lorenza have 7.5 hectares of vineyards, of which 2 hectares belong to the prestigious 'Grand Cru' vineyard called "Ginestra". The remaining 5.5 hectares belong to the San Pietro, Pajana and Gris vineyards in Barolo and Nebbiolo vineyards in the Nebbiolo d'Alba denomination, as well as varieties such as Barbera, Dolcetto and Nascetta planted in the Ferrione vineyard to the west. , under the own cellar. Since the 2018 harvest, the family has started to rent a small plot of Monforte Le Coste.
His son Stefano Conterno joined the winery in 2010, the first year that his Sori Ginestra was bottled separately. The working philosophy of the Conterno is simple: "when tasting a wine, you have to experience the characteristics of the terroir; This is created in the vineyard and finds its expression in the grapes. Each wine has its own history and soul, and tells us about a part of the Langhe region of Monforte d'Alba. In winery Diego and Stefano they make the classic Barolo monfortino. They use static fermenters (not rotofermentators usual in Piedmont to extract more and soften the tannin), cement and large oak boots to make broad, structured and mineral Barolos.
