A Torna dos Pasás 2023 Red
Luis Anxo Rodríguez is, in our opinion, the spiritual father of the "vitivinicultural revolution" of Galicia. When even in Galicia quality wines were not known and the objective was to produce high yield wines, Luis Anxo, began to elaborate wines with native varieties, in order to demonstrate the potential of these to produce distinctive wines worthy of aging. . Luis Anxo, slow and humble man, studied philosophy and enology at the school of enology in Madrid and on his return, in 1988, he began to produce in the place of Os Pasás, in Paixón (Arnoia), restructuring old vineyards of Palomino's foreign varieties and Garnacha Tintorera to the old traditional varietals in Ribeiro. He was a visionary and proof of this is in his wines; We do not know such old wines in Galicia that have evolved as well as the wines of Luis Anxo. You can still taste bottles from the 90s, 2000s and 2001s in full fitness. Since its beginnings, it has remained faithful to its philosophy of producing wines that show all their potential over the years, just as great wines do, oblivious to passing fashions and today this recognition is unanimous in the world of wine.
Currently, Luis Anxo works 5 Ha., 3.7 Ha in the Arnoia Valley and 1.3 Ha in Rivadavia, spread over 100 microparcelas. The floors are mostly granite-decomposed sand. The vines are between 10 and 50 years old and only works with native varieties, Treixadura, Albariño, Lado and Torrontés for whites and Brancellao, Caíño Longo, Caiño Redondo and Ferrol for red wines. It only includes something from the local Sousón and Garnacha Tintorera in its basic red Eidos Ermos. His philosophy in the vineyard is to maintain balance. It does not use either herbicides or insecticides, although it does use fungicides because Mildew is a latent pathogen in the ribeiro. The treatments are applied only if absolutely necessary, and never during a month before the harvest to help preserve the native yeasts existing in the grapes that help initiate spontaneous fermentation.
A Torna dos Pasás 2023 is the second red wine of Luis in a vintage of good maturity in the Ribeiro. Elaborated with vines of 10-20 years of Brancellao, Ferrol, Caíño Longo and Caiño Redondo on steep granite slopes in the town of Arnoia. The grapes are despalled and fermented with their native yeasts in stainless steel tanks. and it is raised in French oak barrels used between 9 and 12 months without clarifying or filtering. A Torna dos Pasás 2023 is a fresh medium-bodied red with intense aromas of red, spicy and intense floral fruits. In the mouth we can find some vegetable note yet to be polished that will dissipate with a couple of years of aging.
