DOCG. Barolo (Piedmont), Italy - 100% Nebbiolo from 4 Ha Boscareto vineyard and 1 Ha Lirano vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba. Soils in this southeastern part of the Barolo appellation are more sandy of limestone origin, which gives it more freshness, finesse and floral aromas. It has a nice ruby color with a low layer. On the nose it is very subtle and elegant with red fruit, withered rose, liquorice, leather on a balsamic background. The palate is a fresh, medium-bodied wine, with fine and slightly marked tannins, an ethereal, savory and tremendously addictive texture, with a long and persistent finish. It is a wine that perfectly reflects the Barolo de Serralunga in a low-extraction style with which Ferdinando seeks a style that is accessible from the moment it comes on the market but also with some aging potential. A jewel of excellent value for money for lovers of classic Barolos. Recommended by The Sommelier.
FERDINANDO PRINCIPIANO BAROLO SERRALUNGA 2022
Ferdinando Principiano is one of Piedmont's renowned producers, with its winery based in Serralunga d'Alba, within the Barolo appellation. The estate is known for its low-intervention approach, the use of native grape varieties and a focus on wines that clearly express the character of their vineyards. The estate owns vineyards in different areas of the Langhe, with a particularly strong connection to Serralunga d'Alba.
Philosophy
Principiano follows an artisanal and respectful approach to winemaking, using spontaneous fermentations and minimal intervention in the cellar. Its Barolos seek to combine the depth and structure characteristic of Serralunga with an elegant, fresh and transparent expression of Nebbiolo. The result is a range of highly individual wines rooted in tradition while avoiding excessive intervention.
Winemaking and Vintage
Ferdinando Principiano Barolo Serralunga 2022 is made from Nebbiolo grapes grown in Serralunga d'Alba, on predominantly calcareous and mineral soils. Fermentation takes place spontaneously with indigenous yeasts and minimal intervention. Following fermentation and maceration, the wine is aged for approximately 24 months in large wooden casks. The winemaking and grape origin aim to express the structure, freshness and mineral character of Serralunga while preserving the distinctive personality of Nebbiolo.
Vineyard and Grape Variety
The grapes come from vineyards in Serralunga d'Alba, one of the historic communes of the Barolo appellation. The area's geology combines different formations, including calcareous and mineral-rich soils that contribute to the marked acidity, structure and tannic character of its wines. The wine is made from 100% Nebbiolo.
Tasting Note
Ruby red with characteristic garnet reflections and transparency. The nose is elegant and complex, showing violet and rose, ripe cherry and red berries, together with dried herbs, woodland, leather and balsamic nuances. The palate is fresh, juicy and structured, with vibrant acidity and fine, firm and progressive tannins. Fruit integrates beautifully with mineral and spicy notes, leading to a long, savoury and persistent finish. A Barolo combining the power of Serralunga with a refined expression and excellent ageing potential.
Food Pairings
Ideal with Piedmontese cuisine, particularly tajarin with ragù, agnolotti del plin, braised red meats and grilled meats. It also pairs beautifully with game, mushroom risotto, white truffle, porcini mushrooms and well-aged hard cheeses.
