JACQUESSON AVIZE CHAMP CAÏN EXTRA-BRUT 2015
Jacquesson is one of the Champagne houses that has best evolved from tradition to a contemporary interpretation based on terroir, individual plots, and minimal intervention. Founded in 1798, the house acquired a new dimension under the direction of brothers Jean-Hervé and Laurent Chiquet, who committed to progressively reducing production volumes and concentrating their work on vineyards and cuvées with great personality.
Jacquesson's philosophy is based on the selection of exceptional plots in Dizy, Aÿ, Avize, and Hautvillers, with vinifications that seek to preserve the identity of each location. From this approach come some of the house's most recognizable single-vineyard Champagnes, including Avize Champ Caïn.
Champ Caïn embodies the expression of Chardonnay from Avize, one of the great terroirs of the Côte des Blancs, and is one of Jacquesson's most precise and mineral cuvées.
Philosophy
Jacquesson's philosophy stems from a fundamental idea: Champagne must express the vineyard and the vintage before any winemaking recipe.
The house works with moderate yields, vinifications that seek to preserve the personality of the grape, and extended aging. Oak is used as a winemaking tool, not as an aromatic element, and the dosage is deliberately kept low so as not to mask the expression of the terroir.
In its single-vineyard cuvées, this philosophy reaches its fullest expression. Champ Caïn comes exclusively from a small plot in Avize and allows one to appreciate with particular clarity the combination of Chardonnay, chalk, and sun exposure.
Production, Vintage, Vineyard, and Variety
Avize Champ Caïn Extra-Brut 2015 is a Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru made exclusively from Chardonnay grapes grown in a single plot in Avize, in the Côte des Blancs.
The vineyard, approximately 1.3 hectares in size, has been planted since 1962 and has a density of nearly 12,000 vines per hectare. The vines are trained using the Chablis pruning method, and the plot is located on the lower part of a south-facing slope. The soil combines limestone with sandy clays, silts, and calcareous gravels, resting on a subsoil of Campanian chalk.
The 2015 vintage was characterized by a mild and wet winter and spring, followed by a very hot and dry summer. The harvest took place on September 21st, when the grapes had reached full and balanced ripeness.
The winemaking process aims to preserve the expression of the Chardonnay and its terroir, with extended aging and a very low dosage of around 1 g/l. The wine was disgorged in February 2015, after a long period of bottle aging on its lees. Production of this vintage was very limited, with approximately 10,772 bottles and 402 magnums.
The result is a Champagne that combines the greater breadth and maturity of 2015 with the characteristic chalky tension of Avize.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Bright golden yellow with slightly golden highlights and a fine, persistent mousse.
Nose: Deep and elegant, with ripe citrus, mandarin, candied lemon, pear, and white flowers, accompanied by almond, hazelnut, and delicate hints of freshly baked bread. With aeration, notes of acacia honey, dried flowers, and a pronounced minerality of chalk emerge. The warm vintage contributes volume and maturity without sacrificing precision.
Palate: Broad, structured, and extraordinarily saline. It has an enveloping, almost creamy texture, quickly punctuated by a pronounced chalky tension. Citrus and dried fruit emerge over a well-defined mineral background, while the minimal dosage allows the acidity and salinity to dominate.
It is a profound, powerful, and at the same time very precise Champagne, with extraordinary length and a finish of marked mineral persistence. The 2015 vintage provides more volume and richness than the 2014, but retains Avize's characteristic ability to contribute tension and verticality.
Pairing
Jacquesson Avize Champ Caïn 2015 is a Champagne for the table, not just for aperitifs. Its structure and depth make it a perfect match for oysters, lobster, langoustines, scallops, and high-quality fish, especially grilled or baked. Its saline and mineral character works wonderfully with seafood, while the ample texture of the 2015 vintage also allows it to be paired with roasted poultry, capon, or fish dishes with creamy sauces. It is also particularly interesting with dishes incorporating truffles, mushrooms, nuts, or butter, where the complexity of Chardonnay can fully unfold.
Avize Champ Caïn 2015 is one of Jacquesson's great Blanc de Blancs, a single-vineyard Champagne where the depth of the vintage meets the chalky precision of Avize.
