Suertes del Marqués Trenzado 2016
Suertes del Marqués, is a family winery headed by Jonathan García, key in the resurgence of quality wines on the island of Tenerife. Twenty years before, they sold their grapes to other wineries of the Valle de La Orotava Denomination of Origin, until in 2006 they sold their first harvest. Geographically they are located in the north of the island of Tenerife, specifically in the Orotava Valley, and within it in the municipality of the same name. Without losing sight of the respect for tradition, Suertes del Marqués bet on artificially interfering as little as possible in the production of wines, for which they work with native yeasts, avoid racking and use sulfur in small quantities only prior to bottling. wines All processes are carried out manually, from work in the vineyard to harvest. In the vineyard they avoid the use of systemic treatments, only using natural products in the appearance of diseases. They work native varieties in free standing betting on the use of traditional driving systems such as the Braided Cord, unique in the world, only with winemakers of the Orotava Valley, trying to preserve the wine heritage of the area that goes back to five centuries behind. They have 11 Ha. In property located from 300 to 750 meters above sea level and with different orientations and soil composition. In turn Suertes del Marqués works another 15 hectares with vine growers in the area with vineyards between 250 and 800 meters above sea level. Currently they have the technical direction of Luis Seabra, a former enologist from Niepoort in Portugal who also makes his own wine in the Douro and North of Portugal. The climate in La Orotava is temperate Atlantic. The year 2016 was a warm vintage in the valley. Winter was warmer than usual, spring was cold, but summer was warm again. Despite the warm year, it is considered one of the coolest vintages of the winery due to the most advanced moment chosen for the harvest and the way of winemaking. Braided is the second wine of Suertes del Marqués as far as its range of targets is concerned. It is the younger brother of Vidonia, although it is not without complexity and depth. Braided 2016 is 95% White Listán accompanied by 5% of Pedro Ximénez, Gual, Marmajuelo, Albillo criollo, Malvasía, Vijariego white from basaltic soils of volcanic origin. The fermentation took place in different media, stainless steel, 500 l oak barrels. and an oak foudre of 4,500 l., except for the grapes from one of the six vineyards, which fermented in stainless steel and matured exclusively in cement. The aging took place during 9 months in used barrels of 500 l., A new fudre of 4,500 l. and a square concrete deposit. Braided 2016 is currently shown somewhat reductive after the cork with notes of toasted and sulphurous corn typical of the "volcanism" of these wines. With good aeration appear the pear, green apple, citrus, herbaceous, almonds on an iodine background. The palate shows all its potential, with structure, minerality, saltiness that make it an intense and long wine.
