ALBERTO NANCLARES & SILVIA PRIETO COCCINELLA 2018
Alberto Nanclares, a training economist and working for a multinational in Madrid in the 90s, decided to leave everything and buy a wooden boat to settle in Castrelo-Cambados (Rías Baixas) where he settled his steps on a farm of five thousand square meters planted with strains of the Albariño breed. In 1997 he transformed the garage of his house into a cellar and began to make his wine until in 2001 he officially became a winemaker.
In August 2015 and given the increased demand for its wines, particularly from the United States, Alberto Nanclares decided to partner with Silvia Prieto, a young winemaker with whom the work is distributed both in the vineyard and in the commercial part.
Today it has 5 hectares of vineyards in Pradenda, Cambados and Castrelo. Its vineyards, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, benefit from the daily sea breezes, while the granitic soils, so common in the region, bring an incredible minerality and freshness to your wines. After a few years of conventional agriculture, he decided to completely abandon chemical treatments and became completely organic, working some vineyards in biodynamics. For the cultivation of its vineyards, it applies the principles of minimum intervention, seeking a biological balance of the plant that allows the expression of the soil. Pay with compost made with the bagasse of the grapes and algae that collects in the Arousa estuary, which fundamentally provide trace elements, minerals and antibiotics that improve the resistance of plants to diseases. In the cellar it goes through the maximum respect for the grape and with the minimum intervention in the wines, without using any type of additive except sulphurous in moderate doses. Bottles without clarifying and with roughing filtering, seeking to preserve, at its best, the personality of each wine. In our opinion,
Alberto Nanclares has become the revelation viticulturist of recent years in Salnés (Rías Baixas). The exponential progression in the quality and high demand of its wines, of very scarce production, is making it a true cult winegrower.
The 2018 vintage was characterized by a winter that started dry and ended cold-rainy. The sprouting was late, the spring continued cold-rainy and just hot, normal flowering. Summer too cool-wet delayed maturation, but August was dry-hot, with + 30 ° ahead of the harvest in 15 days. The harvest began on 10.09 and ended on 06.10 of 2018.
Coccinella 2018 was developed with a manual selection of the clusters in the vineyard. Transfer to the warehouse in boxes of 15 kg. Pressing the whole cluster in low pressure pneumatic press. Alcoholic fermentation with its own yeasts, without racking, at a controlled temperature and without adding any type of product except sulfur in used French oak barrels (2010) of 400L. (Boutes cooperage). "Batonnage" weekly for 3 months and aging on its lees 11 months until bottling on August 21, 2019. Bottling without tartaric stabilization by cold, without clarifying, roughing and sulphurous filtering in moderate doses.
Coccinella has established itself as one of the purest Albariños in the privileged valley of Salnés. In the previous vintage 2016 (in 2017 it was not elaborated nor will there be in 2019) it obtained nothing less than 95+ PARKER. Of this vintage 2018 only 504 bottles were made. Very limited units.
