SOCIÉTÉ CIVILE DU CHÂTEAU LAFLEUR CHÂTEAU GRAND VILLAGE BLANC 2024
Château Grand Village belongs to the Guinaudeau family, one of the most respected families in contemporary Bordeaux and also responsible for the legendary Château Lafleur in Pomerol.
The family's history in the world of wine is closely linked to Lafleur, but their winemaking activity has also extended to other properties and projects. At Grand Village, located in Mouillac on the right bank of the Garonne River, the family has developed its own interpretation of Bordeaux wines, both red and white.
The white wine stems from a particularly interesting endeavor: to demonstrate that the right bank of Bordeaux can produce great dry white wines, with the same attention to terroir, precision, and aging potential that characterizes the family's great red wines.
Philosophy
The philosophy of Château Grand Village is deeply rooted in the Guinaudeau family's approach to winemaking: respect for the vineyard, a pursuit of precision, and minimal intervention to create wines that express their origin.
In the vineyard, the focus is on balance and biodiversity, while in the winery, the aim is to preserve the aromatic purity and natural tension of the grapes. Oak is used to add texture and depth, not to mask the varietal character.
In Grand Village Blanc, this philosophy translates into a wine that combines the energy and citrus character of Sauvignon Blanc with the structure and depth of Sémillon, supported by the minerality of the calcareous soils.
Winemaking, Vintage, Vineyard, and Varieties
Château Grand Village Blanc 2024 is a blend of 78% Sauvignon Blanc and 22% Sémillon, sourced from the Grand Village vineyards in Mouillac, within the Bordeaux region.
The estate is situated in a clay and limestone environment, with a subsoil that imparts freshness and tension to the white grape varieties. The vineyard is cultivated with a focus on moderate yields and balanced ripening to preserve the grapes' natural acidity.
The 2024 harvest began on September 5th and continued until September 11th, with plots selected according to their degree of ripeness. This vintage resulted in a wine particularly marked by freshness and energy.
The winemaking process combines different vessels and aims to preserve the fruit's identity. Aging is carried out using a combination of oak and stainless steel, allowing the wine to gain texture and complexity without losing its fresh and mineral character.
The result is a particularly well-defined Bordeaux white, where the Sauvignon Blanc contributes tension, citrus, and herbal notes, while the Sémillon provides volume and depth.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Bright pale yellow with greenish reflections and a luminous appearance.
Nose: Intense, fresh, and very expressive. Lime, freshly squeezed lemon, grapefruit, and white flowers emerge, accompanied by hints of peach, pear, and delicate herbal notes. With aeration, nuances of limestone, chalk, and white spices appear, adding depth.
Palate: Vibrant, precise, and with great tension. The entry is fresh and citrusy, with a very pronounced acidity that runs across the palate. The texture is fine and slightly creamy, balancing the wine's energy and providing breadth. The minerality is very clear, leaving a chalky, saline, and very refreshing sensation.
The finish is long, dry, and extraordinarily clean, with hints of lime, grapefruit, white flowers, and damp stone. A white wine of great energy, where the ripeness of the fruit is perfectly balanced by a sharp acidity and a marked mineral character. Early reviews of the vintage highlight precisely its citrus intensity, tension, and length.
Pairings
Château Grand Village Blanc 2024 is particularly food-friendly and pairs excellently with oysters, shellfish, clams, razor clams, and white fish. Its pronounced acidity and minerality work wonderfully with grilled fish, ceviches, and citrus dishes, while its texture also makes it suitable for fish with creamy sauces, scallops, and seafood rice dishes. The Sauvignon Blanc also contributes a natural affinity with vegetables, asparagus, artichokes, and aromatic herbs, while the Sémillon provides sufficient structure to accompany poultry and goat cheeses.
Château Grand Village Blanc 2024 demonstrates the potential of a great Bordeaux white wine outside of the most well-known appellations. The combination of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, the chalky character of the vineyard, and the precision of the Guinaudeau family result in a fresh, mineral, taut, and profoundly gastronomic wine, with an elegance reminiscent of the great white wines of Bordeaux. A wine that unites the Atlantic energy of Sauvignon with the depth and texture of Sémillon.
