A.O.C. Saint-Joseph, France - 100% Syrah from the northern Rhône Valley, produced by Jean-Louis Chave as part of his négociant project, JL Chave Sélections.
This wine comes from the Saint-Joseph appellation, in the northern part of the Rhône Valley, France, a territory characterized by granitic slopes on the right bank of the river. In this region, the dominant variety for red wines is Syrah, which expresses profiles of black fruit, violet, and black pepper, very characteristic of the northern Rhône.
The Offerus cuvée has historical significance: the name alludes to Saint Christopher before his baptism, a figure named Offerus. It is also the first wine that Jean-Louis Chave launched within his Sélections project in 1995, conceived as a parallel line to the domaine to offer wines representative of the Rhône at a more accessible price.
Regarding the origin of the grapes, the wine comes from a mosaic of plots in Saint-Joseph, partly from the producer's own vineyards and partly from grapes acquired from trusted local growers. Over time, the proportion of fruit from the estate's own vineyards has increased, especially from younger plantings not destined for the domaine's main bottling.
The winemaking follows a classic Northern Rhône approach. The Syrah grapes are vinified by plot in separate tanks, and the wine is aged in used oak barrels, avoiding excessive oak to preserve the fruit expression and the mineral character derived from the granitic soils. This style seeks a balance between ripe fruit, freshness, and the spices typical of Northern Rhône Syrah.
The result is a structured yet approachable Saint-Joseph, with the usual aromas of black fruit, violet, pepper, and hints of graphite and Mediterranean herbs, maintaining the hallmark elegance and precision that characterizes the Chave family.
