D.O. Bierzo, Spain - 95% Mencía, 5% Garnacha Tintorera and Doña Blanca. Made with grapes from a minimum plot within the Viña de los Pinos oriented to the west, located where it breaks a plane towards the slope, it has a peculiar, sandy, infrequent soil in El Bierzo. 12 months in French oak of various uses Alcoholic degree: 13.0º. A total of 525 bottles were bottled in January 2018. Light and shiny coating, flowers, forest and berries on the nose. The palate is velvety, deep, with minerality and fruit in balance and subtle tannicity that give it length and invite another drink.
CANTARIÑA Family Wines
Cantariña was born from the illusion of some brothers (Fede, Consu, Sonso, Santi and Jorge ... Ysart Alvarez de Toledo) for recovering an activity that his family had abandoned decades ago but of which two jewels were still preserved: Los Pinos and Valdeobispo. With the fruit of these two vineyards located in Villafranca del Bierzo, the Ysart Alvarez de Toledo brothers want to resume viticulture and the production of good wine.
Cantariña has a clear vocation for innovation: there is nothing more up-to-date in the Spanish winemaking scene today than the recovery of the terroir and respect for nature in the production of wines to make enjoy and transmit what the land offers us. Slogans like "The Future is the Past" and movements like Club Matador push us to defend our values.
The project began by producing in 2015 its first Garnacha Tintorera wine (Alicante Bouschet). Just 900 bottles. In 2016 they also dared with a small plot of Mencía that we pampered to obtain a true jewel from which only 500 bottles are produced ...
Encouraged by the quality of these two terroirs, we embarked on the recovery of the two vineyards hitherto leased to one of the leading wineries in the area. The planting of an abandoned hectare in Los Pinos was undertaken with local castes (merenzao and godello) and the recovery began in Los Pinos in 2017 and Valdeobispo in 2018, respecting the original planting framework in glass, of about 4000 plants per Hectare .
Cantariña cares with care for 13 hectares of vineyard spread over three sites located in the municipality of Villafranca del Bierzo. The plots are called Cotelo, Valdeobispo (name of pleasant family memory), and Viña de Los Pinos, which is probably one of the most iconic and photographed vineyards in Bierzo.
